Dyrall Newlon provided updates on the fire department’s vehicles. Repairs are scheduled to begin later this week on the tanker and rescue unit, while the engine is expected to be costly. Medic 212 remains in parts but will be addressed next. Newlon also reported that the department currently has 54 members, with 37 shifts covered this month. While many still require training, he noted the department is making progress.
Newlon also asked council whether the department would cover the cost of EMS classes, which range between $1,655 and $1,800 per student. Council agreed the department should pay only for students living within a six-mile radius of the village. Mayor Mohler added that he would consult further on establishing official guidelines.
Council also heard from Lane Holdren, who requested reinstatement as a firefighter/EMT after resigning earlier this year. Council agreed to reinstate Holdren and will officially vote on the matter at its next meeting.
Tumblin informed council that park caretaker Patrick Samson has stopped showing up for work and is presumed to have quit. She reported receiving a strong recommendation for Roseville resident Jamie Loterbaugh, who has experience maintaining the village ballfields. Council expressed support for Loterbaugh and will place his hiring on the agenda for next week.
She also announced that Trevor Miller is planning a recreation tournament at the Rec Center on Saturday, August 23. Flyers have been distributed, and the event has been promoted on the village’s Facebook page.
Tumblin presented an updated estimate for Phase 2 of the China Street project. The original 2018 cost was estimated at $87,000, but new estimates now project the cost at $618,200. Grant opportunities will be pursued to help offset expenses.
The Wilson property was also discussed. Councilman Redfern expressed concern over the overgrown condition of the lot and suggested a deadline for cleanup of the existing trailer and building. Mayor Mohler recommended exploring surplus options through GovDeals, while Tumblin said she would begin by arranging for the grass to be mowed.
Tumblin reported meeting with a representative from the Public Entity Pool (PEP), who toured the fire station and reviewed recent department challenges. The representative provided a list of recommendations, which Tumblin shared with council.
Council received an invitation from Roseville to attend a ceremony on September 13 recognizing firefighters Mark Dalrymple, Dana Strate, and Danny Rodgers Jr. for their bravery during a recent house fire.
